Classics Club Book Spin

Wasn’t sure which book on my Classics Club list to read next (keep an eye out for an upcoming post about my latest read), so I decided to participate in the latest Classics Spin. Basically, you pick 20 books from your list that you still haven’t read — five you are hesitant to read, five you can’t wait to read, five you are neutral about, and five free choice (I picked rereads) — then post them numbered 1-20 before next Monday, when The Classics Club will announce a number. Then I have to read the book corresponding to that number by January 5. Here’s my list:

  1. Burke, Edmund Burke: Reflections on the Revolution in France
  2. Burney, Frances: The Wanderer
  3. Dickens, Charles: Bleak House
  4. Poe, Edgar Allen: Collected Stories and Poems
  5. Rousseau, Jean-Jaques: Emile
  6. Austen, Jane: Lady Susan
  7. Montgomery, L.M.: Emily of New Moon
  8. Swift, Jonathon: Gulliver’s Travels
  9. Radcliffe, Ann: The Mysteries of Udolpho
  10. Beagle, Peter S: The Last Unicorn
  11. Bronte, Anne: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
  12. Hardy, Thomas: Far From the Madding Crowd
  13. Hawthorne, Nathaniel: The House of the Seven Gables
  14. Shakespeare, William: Othello
  15. Shelley, Mary: Frankenstein
  16. Burney, Frances: Evelina
  17. Cooper, James Fenimore: The Red Rover
  18. Burnett, Frances Hodgson: A Little Princess
  19. Gaskell, Elizabeth: North and South
  20. Stevenson, Robert Louis: The Black Arrow

  • Hallo, Hallo —

I’ve been wanting to participate in a tCC SPIN all year long! 🙂 This is my first one and I’m beyond elated to join in so I can start to visit other clubber’s blogs & become more active in the tCC community! I’ve started to read after canons this year and will continue as 2015 begins as I found one on a blog tour that re-envisions Jane Eyre! Now, all I have to do is finish Jane Eyre before my tour stop! lol

From your list the books which interest me the most are:

    Dickens, Charles: Bleak House
Poe, Edgar Allen: Collected Stories and Poems
    Austen, Jane: Lady Susan
Montgomery, L.M.: Emily of New Moon
Bronte, Anne: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
Hawthorne, Nathaniel: The House of the Seven Gables
    Shakespeare, William: Othello
Burnett, Frances Hodgson: A Little Princess
    Gaskell, Elizabeth: North and South

And, what wicked joy! Wow! 3 tCC Clubbers & share books in common on our SPIN #8! You picked two of mine: The Tenant of Windfell Hall — wait I spelt it wrong!? Oh dear! The Tenant of Wildfell Hall! & Emily of New Moon!

By the by, the two after canons I’m referencing are published by Cedar Fort — a faith-based Indie Pub, the first one was “Sense & Sensibility: a Latter-Day Tale” & my next one will be “Keeping Kate” (the one on Jane Eyre!) You can find info on the tour for Eyre’s under my Bookish Events 2015 whereas the review for the Austen re-telling is under my Story Vault.

    • Jane Eyre is one of my very favorite books ever. Haven’t read any after canons for it yet — I’ll have to check out “Keeping Kate.”

So excited to read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Emily of New Moon! I love L.M. Montgomery’s other work, and I keep seeing Emily recommended. Picked up a lovely copy at a book store a few weeks ago, so it’s just waiting to be read. And since I’ve read books by Charlotte Brontë and Emily Brontë, I wanted to read one by their sister.

Good luck to you in your book spin!

  • I’m very impressed that you want to read #1; I’ve had it on my mental list for awhile, but I’m too scared to put it in writing! I just finished Othello and it was soul-wrenching. Frankenstein is a wonderful read too.

Best of luck with your spin!

    • Thank you. I referenced Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution” when writing my undergrad thesis, but only read the chapters I was quoting directly. I felt that I should eventually read the entire thing 🙂
